Yin vs Yang opened September 5, 2003.....

This month’s show is titled "Yin vs. Yang" and features the abstract artwork of Joy McCray, Cathy Vaughan, Joanne Dobes, Megan Coram, Allison Skelton, Aaron Thomas Haynes, Jeremiah Jenkins, B. Baker, Matt Wilson and Samuel Mays. As a group these artists have a variety of media represented, from digital prints to sculpture to photography and painting, both traditional and unique styles and methods.

A Scholarship Auction, designed to benefit juniors and seniors at East Tennessee State University in the Department of Art and Design, will set the tone for the opening of “Yin Vs. Yang” on Friday, Sept. 1, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Nelson Fine Art Center.

The silent auction will begin at 7 p.m. and continue throughout the year, will feature art donated by artists who are featured in the gallery each month during special exhibitions.

“As a group, we have a variety of media represented – from digital prints to sculpture to painting,” said Mays. “We are all young artists who have lived and studied in the area while attending schools such as ETSU, Memphis College of Art and Virginia Tech.

Some of the artists, Mays said, have had shows in Arkansas, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky. The show includes six painters, a photographer, a print maker and two sculptors. “We see this exhibition as part of the development and expansion of the local art community,” said Mays.

The proceeds from auction items will be used for the Louise and Dwight Nelson Art and Design Scholarship, established by Dick Nelson in honor of his parents. Scholarship information can be obtained from ETSU’s Office of University Advancement. For more information about the Louise and Dwight Nelson Art and Design Scholarship please click here.
