John Perry (in his words): "I studied art at Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles and at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. Between art schools I studied Anthropology at West Los Angeles College.

While in Portland, I made voodoo dolls for a friend of mine who owned a Botanica. I couldn't afford art school anymore so Ibecame a sous-chef at Crater Lake Lodge near Medford, Oregon and while I was there I learned that my best friend had been killed. His name was John Beckle and he started a restaurant called Montage. Well, I didn't want to go back to Portland so I asked John's spirit what to do. New Orleans popped into my mind so I got on a bus and went there.

In New Orleans I made a living as a cook for a while until I met a guy called Lucky. He is a voodoo doll maker and he has been making dolls for twenty four years. He used to work with a famous doll maker called Chicken Man. I worked with Lucky for a few years making dolls with him and then I broke off on my own.

I make dolls for Chez Vodun on Rampart Street, the Voodoo Museum on Dumaine Street, Voodoo Authentica on Dumaine, yesteryears on Bourbon Street and many other shops in New Orleans."

John relocated to the mountains of East Tennessee in 2005 after hurricane Katrina.
